Health service professionals would generally say that they are patient centred, because they provide treatment and care for people, but this is a very narrow interpretation of what it means to be ‘patient-centred’.To be truly patient centred, health systems and care providers need to think about how any interaction occurs, are they ‘for’ or ‘with’ the patient and their family/carers.

Contemporary patient centred care is evolving into the co-production of health where the patient takes more responsibility and the clinician takes a more ‘guiding’ role.

Health system leaders need to think about much broader engagement with patients and their families including governance systems, risk assessment and education. There is increasing recognition of the need for systemic change to a broader interpretation in contemporary standards from the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare.
